Puppy Prep: Items to Purchase for Your New Pup
I’m flying to Oakland to pick up my Golden Retriever tomorrow morning! I’ve raised a lot of puppies, but only one that became my very own search dog. I must admit, this is more stressful for me than puppy raising for someone else! It’s my money, my pick, my dog to rehome/not fall in love with if it doesn’t have the right temperament and drive for search work. So, while I’m excited there’s concern. I want this puppy to work, but I know there’s a chance he or she won’t.
These past few weeks, in preparation for the puppy, I’ve been spending money, of course. I’m quite good at it. 🙂
Carry On Bag
On our return flight, the puppy will come along with me as carry on. So, I purchased a new soft crate. I chose the large Amazon Basic Soft Sided Pet Travel Carrier so that the pup will have room to wiggle. I’m hoping no potty accidents on the flight. Hope springs eternal. (It is a short flight! Just over an hour.)
In addition to the bag, I’m going to bring a small blanket. This was not a purchase, but a sweet gift from a friend of mine that’s bringing home a puppy too! I’m going to rub the blanket all over the mother, Bree, and then on the flight home my new puppers will have something that smells like mom. This will mean zero crying on the airplane, right?
Dog Food and Supplements
The puppy is eating Nature’s Domain Puppy, so a large bag is sitting in my dog room. I’m going to stick to that food for the first year. Coming into a new home, with new dogs and a new person is enough change! (I’ve made changes with puppy food before, and it was a disaster.) The breeder also recommended fish oil and Dr. Bill’s canine supplement. Both are on their way!
For the first few months, my new puppy will earn a lot of positive rewards. Verbally, physically and in his or her belly. I ordered two Natural Balance Dog Food Rolls and a bag of Zuke’s Mini Naturals. I cannot run out of treats! 🙂
I think every puppy should have a new collar! Since I’m not sure of the gender yet, I went with a beautiful unisex leather collar from Genuine Collars. (It was sent to me free of charge to try out and review!) The small is the perfect size for my new puppy, and I cannot wait to use it. (Modeled here by my girl Quincy! She’s about the same size as my puppers will be for the first month or two!)
I’m trying out a new ID tag too. This particular brand had over 11,000 5 star reviews! I ordered it two weeks ago, since the engraving takes a bit. Instead of putting a name on the tag, I use my last name. That way if I need to use the tag for another dog it will work. I also put an note on the tag that my dog is microchipped just in case anyone gets a funny idea about stealing my pup they’ll know I can prove HE IS MINE. (Am I the only one that worries about dog thievery?)
New Toy: Pickle Pocket
A friend of mine recommended the Pickle Pocket, so I found it on Amazon. This particularly toy had over 229 five star reviews. (I’m really into reviews when I’m going to buy something new. It’s supposed to be long lasting and provide an amazing amount of entertainment.) Basically, I’m going to fill it up with dog food and let the puppers gnaw on it.
Please oh please do not add up how much I’ve spent on my new puppy thus far! He or she isn’t even home yet! Really, I’m happy to do it. I cannot imagine a better Christmas present, and I cannot wait to go and snuggle all eight puppies tomorrow!
Thank you to Jessica Hecock for the puppy photos!
