Seven Links for Sunday
Before I get to my seven links, I must tell you how much I’ve enjoyed the rain in Southern California this winter! Everything is SO green, and the mountains have SO much snow! Of course, I couldn’t resist going up 6000 feet to Lake Arrowhead for a dog snow day. There was running, barking and joy. Some dog posing on rocks too, because it takes a lot of clicks to get the world’s best dog photo in the snow. Worth it, I think…
And now, onto the seven best links you’ll click on this lazy Sunday morning.
I purchased a 40 oz Hydroflask with a straw lid in July, and it changed my life. No, that is not an overstatement. It comes with me to work every single day, and yoga, too. When I travel, I throw it in my backpack. In fact, I take it so many places my sister makes fun of me and my red 40oz Hydroflask. Whatever. She’s jealous.
I learned something new. Never, in 141 years, have cats been allowed at New York’s Westminster Dog Show. Well, that’s changing this February 13/14 and there’s a backlash. What?! You can read all about it in this article from NPR.
I like to eat. I like to bake. I don’t make anything a second time unless it’s AMAZING. This recipe is:
Feeds a group
I’ve made Best Banana Cake three times now, and it’s been a HIT. Recipe requests from teachers, student requests to make it again, and I keep sneaking slices when it sits in my fridge! Plus, it fills a 13X9 pan and it’s one layer, so it feeds a group without much effort. As an added bonus, it’s from my favorite food blogger, Sally. (If you haven’t looked at her site yet, you should. It’s lots of fun.)
Use Sally’s frosting recipe, it’s delicious, but there’s a much simpler way to whip it together. Take the ingredients cold from the fridge, and dump them in a food processor. Then, blend until smooth. Done. When I first read this method, I didn’t believe it would work. But, because it was a suggestion from Joy of Cooking, I gave it a try. The consistency is perfect! The trick is to keep pulsing. It’s like magic.
I got into smoothies a few years ago. Again, life changing. Before smoothies, I thought fruit was ok, but the risk of the sour or rotten chunk cut down on my enjoyment. Plus, you must eat it quickly or it goes bad, and that’s too much pressure. Well, smoothies eliminate all of that. The fruit is frozen and blended into a single, pleasing flavor. My favorite recipe at the moment? This mango smoothie from The Brown Eyed Baker. It’s #yum. Oh, and add a handful of baby spinach before you blend. I promise, you can’t taste it, and it ups the nutritional value.

My niece is three, and she got this AquaDoodle Travel Mat for Christmas. It’s a reusable mat for drawing that comes with a little pen you fill with water. One side is red, the other blue, and she can practice her shapes in the car. Once the mat dries, she can use her water pen to fill it up with doodles again. She loves it, and I make sure to take it along whenever we go for a ride.
I look at photos all the time because I like to, and so that I can become a better photographer. This article from The Washington Post introduced me to Swarat Ghosh, a street photographer in India.
